Employers add own cigarette tax
Smoking ousted by higher costs and ban cigarette smoking in the workplace are increasingly concerned by another cost increase - this time for health insurance.
A growing number of public and private sector employers, workers must use tobacco to pay higher premiums, hoping to motivate more of them to stop smoking and reducing costs for care Medical companies and their employees.
Meijer Inc., Gannett Co., American Financial Group Inc., PepsiCo Inc. and Northwest Airlines are among companies that already have fees or planning to delivery higher premiums smokers. The amounts range from about $ 20 to $ 50 per month.

“With smokers costing companies more than 25 per cent more than non-smokers in the field of health care, it only makes sense that good business,” she said.
